Voip (Voice over IP) : What is it?

VoIP is the term used to describe any system which allows voice to be carried over the internet, as opposed to the more traditional telephone network.

VoIP can be used by almost anyone with a PC and access to a broadband connection. aql offer a special kind of VoIP service running a protocol called SIP (Session Initiation Protocol).

The service can be broken down into 3 key areas:

• Landline to PC calls
• PC to Landline calls

How do I use it?

First you need to get either a VoIP phone (SIP phone) or download one of the many free "virtual phones" which can be installed on your PC or laptop. A good free virtual phone application is x-lite from www.xten.com. Alternatively, if you prefer to use a standard phone, you can also purchase a small conversion box which allows you to plug your standard phone into your broadband socket. If you want to make outgoing calls, you will need to pre-purchase some call credit, available in blocks of £5,£10,£20,£50 and £100.
